Manangazira brace lights up derby but Gem Boys hold City Fathers 2-2

The Mutare Derby delivered drama, goals, and a striker finding his smile again.
Mutare City Rovers striker Raymond Manangazira scored twice yesterday in the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League Week 19 fixture against Manica Diamonds U19 FC.
However, the Gem Boys refused to fold, fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw and a share of the spoils.
For Manangazira, the brace meant more than just numbers.
“It was a joy to score in the derby and to be back amongst the scorers,” he told Fanzone.
The goals took him to 7 for the season. He now sits just three behind the league’s leading pack.
Yet the mood in the City camp was mixed. After racing into a two-goal lead, Mutare City Rovers switched off and allowed their neighbors back into the game.
“We switched off during the second half,” Manangazira admitted, cutting a frustrated figure at full time. “But we promise the Mutare City fans that better days will come.”
The story behind the brace runs deeper, the former Pro Ruwa FC hitman endured a difficult spell last year.
A recurring knee injury kept him out for long periods, a time he says made him contemplate quitting football altogether.
The knee problem resurfaced early this year. But now, he is fit, focused, and firing.
“I’m targeting at least 20 goals this season,” added Manangazira. “And I want to help Mutare City Rovers fight for top honours.”
Seven down. Thirteen to go. And with that confidence back, the Eastern Region defenses should take note.
Mutare City Rovers will be disappointed to drop points in the derby, but they leave with a striker in form and a target man who has rediscovered his fire.
