Billiat brace fires Scottland to 10-point lead at the top

Scottland FC opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after beating TelOne FC 2-0 at Rufaro Stadium. The win extended their unbeaten run to nine matches.

A three-minute brace from former Kaizer Chiefs talisman Khama Billiat was enough to seal the win. The 2025 Championship winners are yet to concede in that stretch — a strong statement of intent as they chase back-to-back titles.

With 12 rounds of fixtures remaining before the season ends, Mabvira-vira have set themselves up for yet another successful season.

Scottland FC now sit on 49 points, 10 clear of second-placed Hardrock FC. Hardrock will look to cut the gap when they face Herentals College FC on Sunday at the same venue, Rufaro Stadium.

In the opening exchanges TelOne FC made life difficult for Scottland FC’s star forwards by sitting in a compact low block that kept Walter Musona, Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona quiet.

Scottland only found a clear opening after 26 minutes when Billiat broke down the left and fired a shot that Takudzwa Chikosi parried away.

Minutes later, Billiat was picked out unmarked in the box by Panashe Mutimbanyoka’s lofted cross, but his volley was again denied by an inspired Chikosi.

TelOne barely troubled Scottland keeper Nelson Chadya. Scottland’s best chance came on 36 minutes when Allan Chapinduka handled in the box and Scottland were awarded a penalty.

Walter Musona stepped up after a long delay, but Chikosi saved it with ease. The sides went in level at half-time. Scottland came out with more energy after the break and took the lead on the hour mark when Billiat finished from close range following a Knowledge Musona free-kick.

Billiat was on target again three minutes later. He broke clear on the counter and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Takudzwa Chikosi, who had been drawn off his line. With the net empty, Billiat made no mistake. The former Mamelodi Sundowns star is now joint top goalscorer along with Dynamos’ Frank Agyemang and Washington Navaya of Hardrock FC with 11 goals.

Billiat could have notched a hat-trick after being set up by new man Emmanuel Jalai on the counter-attack, but he missed the target. On two occasions, Jalai threatened and could have added his name to the scoresheet.

Jalai made his Scottland FC debut, coming off the bench in the 78th minute to replace Issaka Mohamed. Jalai joined on loan from Durban City FC. Malawian international Nickson Nyasulu was also among the unused substitutes.
