‘It comes down to mental strength’: Kaindu identifies Hardrock FC’s big-game struggles

Hardrock FC coach Kelvin Kaindu

Kelvin Kaindu has identified two critical areas where his side has consistently fallen short during their maiden Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign, raising serious concerns despite a promising start to life in the top flight.

Despite Hardrock FC’s 4-0 win over ZPC Kariba FC at Chahwanda Stadium on Sunday, Kaindu kept his feet on the ground. While he admitted it was a strong response following an energy-sapping 2-0 defeat to Scottland FC, he expressed concern over key elements of his team’s game.

The Kasongo Golden Boys have punched above their weight in their debut PSL season. Hardrock are second on the PSL table with 36 points from 18 matches, four behind log leaders Scottland FC. However, they have struggled in games against the league’s big boys.

They lost 2-0 to Caps United in the first leg at Rufaro Stadium, and 1-0 to Highlanders at home. They also fell 2-0 in the return fixture against CAF Champions league-bound Scottland FC. Their match against Dynamos was abandoned with the score locked at 1-1.

Plausibly, Hardrock FC have claimed several emphatic wins in 2026, headlined by a 6-1 demolition of Hunters FC and a 3-0 home victory over Simba Bhora FC. Beating ZPC Kariba FC ranks as their second based win.

Kaindu spoke out about his team’s fluctuating tempo, especially when leading matches. He is concerned about his players’ mental strength, although he hopes for an immediate change.

“There are two areas we need to work on. I saw us drop momentum after the fourth goal. That comes down to mental strength,” Kaindu said after ZPC Kariba’s demolition.

“With the way we were circulating the ball, we became a bit casual, especially in defence when we should have pushed for more goals. Yes, four goals is good and keeping a clean sheet is good.

“But we didn’t see any real threat from Kariba. We knew they would come and defend, and that’s what they did. We struggled to score in the first half and got one towards the end. We responded well in the second half from kick-off. We got an early goal which opened up the game.”
