Dream Inn-GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup takes centre stage in Central Region
The much-anticipated Dream Inn-GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup is finally set to take centre stage this Saturday in Kwekwe, with the inaugural draw set to kick off the cup competition featuring the Central Region Soccer League’s top eight teams.
Winners of the tournament will walk away with USD 16 000 in prize money, with the quarter-finals slated for mid-August. The two companies sponsoring the tournament, Dream Inn and Gold Metal Investments (GMI), are owned by Hardrock FC president Shepherd Chahwanda.
After completing the state-of-the-art Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe and bringing football buzz back to the mining city, Chahwanda is leaving nothing to chance as he seeks to uplift football in the region and make a national impact.
The Dream Inn-GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup becomes the first cup competition in the Central Region Soccer League in over a decade. Simply put, the cup tournament has brought a lot of buzz to the region, as clubs who missed out on progression in ZIFA‘s Munhumutapa Challenge Cup seek some respite.
THE TEAMS FACING OFF IN THE MAIDEN DREAM INN-GMI SUPER 8 CUP
With the Central Region Soccer League having reached the halfway mark, the top eight teams at this stage of the 2026 season will battle it out in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
After 17 matches, the Central Region Soccer League top eight are Blanket Mine FC, Chapungu FC, West Nicholson FC, Kwekwe United FC, Gwanda Pirates FC, Tongogara FC, Grain Tigers FC and Super Strikers FC.
As it stands, Blanket Mine FC lead the table on 41 points, just one ahead of Chapungu FC on 40 points. West Nicholson FC are third on 38 points, with Kwekwe United FC close behind in fourth on 36 points.
Gwanda Pirates FC sit fifth on 33 points, while Tongogara FC and Grain Tigers FC are level on 30 points in sixth and seventh respectively. Rounding out the top eight, Super Strikers FC are on 24 points.
