AVM slip, Murambinda dented as ERSL title race hits up

The Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League title race took another twist on Friday afternoon as both Africa Mineral Ventures FC and Deportivo La Murambinda FC failed to take advantage in the championship chase.

At Vengere Stadium in Rusape, Africa Mineral Ventures were held to a frustrating goalless draw by a determined Manica Diamonds U19 side.

It was a result that could have been even more damaging for Collin Chinyani’s men had Manica Diamonds converted the penalty they were awarded in the 52nd minute.

Veteran goalkeeper Takabva Mawaya held his nerve and produced a crucial save to keep his side in the contest and ensure they left with a point.

The draw moves AMV to 39 points, but it leaves them one behind log leaders Yadah FC who sit on 40 points after 18 matches.

With Yadah set to host Tenax CS FC at Heart Stadium tomorrow in a top of the table clash, it was the perfect opportunity for AMV to climb to the apex, and they let it slip.

Elsewhere, Deportivo La Murambinda’s ambition to close the gap at the top also suffered a major setback.

They were beaten 2-1 by Destiny Stars FC at Chisamba Grounds after having initially taken the lead.

The defeat keeps Murambinda on 34 points from 18 games and sees them remain in 6th place, now six points adrift of Yadah. It was a result that dents their championship credentials and puts more pressure on them to find consistency in the second half of the season.

For Destiny Stars, the victory was timely and valuable.

Coming from a goal down to take all three points lifts them to 19 points and moves them further away from the relegation places.

It was a performance built on character and fight, and three points that could prove vital in the months ahead.

With 19 matches played, the log remains tight at the top. Yadah FC lead on 40 points, followed by Africa Mineral Ventures on 39, and Tenax CS FC on 38.

Grand Legacy and Green Fuel are also in the mix on 35 and 34 points respectively, meaning there is very little room for error.

Tomorrow’s fixture between Yadah and Tenax now carries even more weight.

A win for Yadah would open up a four point gap, while a win for Tenax would drag three teams into a fierce battle for top spot.

The second half of the season is already proving to be the most competitive yet.
