Zimbabwe face high-stakes battle for SVNS 3 Qualification

Zimbabwe’s Cheetahs will be chasing a place on the global rugby sevens stage when the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series gets underway in Kampala, Uganda, on September 26 and 27.

The tournament has taken on added importance after Rugby Africa revamped this year’s continental sevens calendar. The Kampala event will double as the African qualifier for the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3 competition, with the winner earning Africa’s place on the global third-tier sevens circuit.

Eight nations will compete over two days, with Zimbabwe drawn in Pool A alongside Nigeria, Ghana and Morocco. Pool B consists of hosts Uganda, Zambia, Tunisia and Senegal. The top two teams from each pool will progress to the semi-finals, leaving the remaining sides to battle for the lower positions.

For Zimbabwe, the draw presents a challenging but achievable route to the knockout stages. The Cheetahs will need to navigate three competitive pool matches before turning their attention to the decisive semi-final and, potentially, a final that could determine their place in the World Rugby pathway.

The importance of the tournament extends beyond simply winning a continental title. The side that finishes first will secure the African qualification spot for the 2027 SVNS 3 season, while the final standings will also determine Africa’s rankings from third through eighth.

The Cheetahs arrive with a strong incentive to perform after Zimbabwe’s sevens programme has continued to build depth and experience. The country has invested in giving its players more opportunities to compete at a high level, with domestic and regional tournaments providing an important platform for the national side.

Zimbabwe will also be familiar with several of the teams involved. Uganda and Zambia have regularly provided tough opposition in African sevens rugby, while Ghana, Nigeria and Morocco bring their own ambitions of breaking through on the continental stage.

The revised structure follows the postponement of the original 12-team Africa Men’s Sevens tournament that was scheduled for Mauritius in June. Rugby Africa subsequently introduced the Kampala qualification tournament, while the Mauritius Sevens Tournament remains scheduled for October 3 and 4.

The World Rugby SVNS system now operates across three levels, with SVNS 3 sitting beneath SVNS 2 and the premier SVNS competition. For Zimbabwe, reaching that level would give the players exposure to a more consistent international programme and the opportunity to measure themselves against teams from outside Africa.

There is little room for error in Kampala. With only one qualification place available, every pool match will carry significance, while the knockout stages will demand composure and consistency.
