Scottland squeeze past ten-man Nsingizini in scrappy CAF test

Scottland FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nsingizini Hotspurs at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, but the result perhaps raised as many questions as it answered ahead of the next leg.

The Zimbabwean champions had the numerical advantage for almost the entire contest after Nsingizini were reduced to ten men as early as the third minute. Despite that, Scottland had to wait until the 65th minute to finally break the deadlock.

Scottland started brightly, with Moffat forcing an excellent save from the Nsingizini goalkeeper before Shidolo was also denied from the resulting corner. Msebe was particularly influential in midfield, repeatedly creating openings and causing problems for the visitors’ defence.

However, Scottland struggled to turn their dominance into goals. Nsingizini defended resolutely and frustrated the home side, who often lacked the sharpness and urgency needed to punish a team playing with ten men.

The breakthrough eventually arrived through substitute Tengeg. Msebe released Jalai down the right, and his precise cross found Tengeg, who calmly finished to give Scottland the lead.

Scottland had opportunities to put the tie beyond doubt, but Tengeg missed another chance after the goalkeeper was caught off his line, while a later effort also went wide.

The 1-0 victory gives Scottland an advantage, but the bigger question is whether it will be enough to withstand Nsingizini’s response on home soil. The Eswatini side have a formidable record at home, and Scottland’s failure to capitalise on playing against ten men for so long could yet come back to haunt them.

For Scottland, the result is valuable, but the performance leaves plenty of room for improvement. The second leg could be a completely different challenge.
