Yadah open gap as chasers falter

The Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League title race took another decisive twist in midweek as Week 26 delivered major setbacks for the chasing pack, leaving log leaders Yadah FC with valuable breathing space at the top heading into Week 27.

Yadah FC did exactly what champions are expected to do when pressure mounts, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Destiny Stars FC to move onto 55 points from 24 games.

Kudakwashe Masaraure’s men now enjoy a 6-point advantage at the summit.

It was a difficult afternoon for the teams in pursuit, as second-placed Tenax CS FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Four Lions FC and remain on 49 points from 25 games.

Africa Mineral Ventures FC kept their own title hopes alive with a crucial 1-0 win over Deportivo La Murambinda FC at Vengere Stadium, courtesy of Blessing Sibanda’s 77th minute strike, a result that lifts AMV to 3rd on 48 points while leaving Deportivo stuck on 47 points in 5th.

Green Fuel FC suffered the biggest blow of the week after going down 1-0 away to Manica Diamonds U19 FC, a result that sees them remain on 47 points.

Elsewhere, Renco Mine FC climbed to 6th on 44 points following a 1-0 win over Masvingo United, while Bikita Chida Athletic Club thumped FC Wangu Mazodze 3-0.

Chivhu FC and Bikita Minerals played out a 1-1 draw, Mutare City Rovers and Power FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate at Chisamba, and Great Zimbabwe University and Buffaloes ended goalless. Grand Legacy FC were on bye.

At the bottom, Power FC and Chivhu are locked together on 15 points, with Four Lions FC still waiting for a first win on 12 points.

With between 11 and 12 games remaining depending on games in hand, the margin for error has all but disappeared for the chasing teams.

The log after Week 26 has Yadah FC leading on 55 points, followed by Tenax CS FC on 49, Africa Mineral Ventures FC on 48, Green Fuel FC and Deportivo La Murambinda FC both on 47, and Renco Mine FC on 44.

Attention now turns to Week 27, where the focus will be on whether anyone can halt Yadah’s march to the title and which teams will hold their nerve in both the promotion and relegation battles.

Tomorrow, the standout fixture takes place at Green Fuel Arena where Green Fuel FC host Renco Mine FC at 15:00, with the hosts desperate for a response after their midweek defeat and Renco aiming to close in on the top five with back-to-back wins.

Second-placed Tenax CS FC host Manica Diamonds U19 FC at Mutare Boys High in a match they cannot afford to slip up in if they are to keep Yadah within reach, while Destiny Stars FC welcome Grand Legacy FC at Chisamba and Masvingo United FC take on Bikita Chida Athletic Club at Mucheke.

Sunday promises even more tension as leaders Yadah FC travel to Mucheke to face FC Wangu Mazodze in a fixture that looks favourable on paper, but one where complacency could prove costly with the title now in sight.

The pick of the day could be at Gaths Mine where Power FC host Africa Mineral Ventures FC with AMV chasing three points to maintain pressure on Yadah and Power, 18th on 15 points, urgently needing results in their fight against relegation.

Deportivo La Murambinda FC will also be looking to bounce back from their loss to AMV when they host bottom side Four Lions FC at Uhera at.

The Sunday programme is completed by Bikita Minerals FC against Mutare City Rovers FC at Lithium and Buffaloes FC versus Chivhu FC at Chisamba, two matches with significant implications at both ends of the table. Great Zimbabwe University FC are on bye.
