‘This is my life’ – Bosso goalie, Ngwenya braced for DeMbare showdown

Highlanders goalkeeper Aaron Ngwenya is relishing Sunday’s blockbuster clash between Bosso and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium, despite ongoing industrial action at the club.

Bosso players have reportedly missed half of this week’s training sessions ahead of the biggest fixture on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League calendar between the two traditional giants.

But Ngwenya insists the Battle of Zimbabwe will be the biggest match of his career. Highlanders head into the derby in decent form despite the off-field issues.

They have won three of their last five matches — beating FC Hunters, Agama FC and Bulawayo Chiefs. They drew with Manica Diamonds and lost 1-0 to TelOne FC at Ascot Stadium.

“This fixture means everything to me — it’s my life. There’s no bigger derby in Zimbabwe than Highlanders versus Dynamos at Barbourfields,” Ngwenya said.

“That’s exactly why we have to raise our level and be better than we were last week. We need the fans behind us. If they pack the stadium, we’ll leave everything on that pitch to give them the bragging rights.”

When the two giants drew 2-2 in March, Ngwenya was on the bench with Reward Muza preferred. But this time, he is likely to start, his first Battle of Zimbabwe, after establishing himself as the trusted pair of hands at the club this season. Tellmore Pio and Collin Mujuru scored for Dynamos, while Nomore Chinyerere and Mongameli Tshuma netted for Bosso.

The salary dispute piles more pressure on Dynamos coach Benjani Mwaruwari, who needs a quick resolution so his players can prepare properly for Sunday’s season-defining showdown.

Dynamos, meanwhile, head to Bulawayo in decent form. They’ve beaten TelOne and Ngezi Platinum Stars, drawn with Manica Diamonds, and lost to Chicken Inn and MWOS. But off-field turmoil threatens to derail DeMbare’s preparations for a fixture that always draws huge crowds and intense national interest.
