Zimbabwean mixed martial artist Themba Gorimbo has announced his retirement from MMA following three consecutive losses in the UFC, bringing an emotional end to one of the most inspiring journeys in African combat sports.

The 35-year-old welterweight confirmed the news on social media after his recent split-decision defeat to Jonathan Micallef at UFC Perth earlier this month. In a heartfelt statement, Gorimbo admitted that his dream of becoming a UFC champion had slipped away, leading him to walk away from the sport.

Although the ending is painful, Gorimbo has plenty to be proud of. The welterweight division in the UFC is widely regarded as one of the toughest and deepest divisions in the organisation, alongside Lightweight. Week after week, fighters in those divisions face elite-level competition, making sustained success incredibly difficult.

Gorimbo’s recent three-fight losing streak may have influenced his decision, but it should not overshadow what he achieved during his time in the UFC. From growing up in Zimbabwe and enduring extreme hardship, to working as a gardener in South Africa to fund his dream of becoming a fighter, Gorimbo’s rise was remarkable. His determination eventually saw him win a title in Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), a breakthrough that opened the door to his UFC contract and ultimately led him to compete on the biggest MMA stage in the world. He became the first Zimbabwean fighter to compete and win in the UFC, inspiring countless young athletes back home.

His story gained worldwide attention in 2023 when he revealed he had just $7 in his bank account before earning his first UFC victory. Despite his struggles, Gorimbo still focused on helping others, including fundraising efforts for a water project in Zimbabwe. That journey eventually caught the attention of Dwayne Johnson, who famously gifted him a house in Florida after hearing his story.

While he may feel disappointed at not reaching championship status, Gorimbo’s legacy goes beyond titles and rankings. He broke barriers for Zimbabwean MMA and proved that someone from humble beginnings could make it to the UFC through determination and resilience.

Even in retirement, Themba Gorimbo remains a pioneer for Zimbabwean sport.
