With just one game left before the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League hits the halfway mark, Week 18 has thrown the championship race into chaos and crowned a new leader at the top.

Kudakwashe Masaraure’s Yadah FC have returned to the summit.

After being dislodged two weeks ago following their first defeat of the season at Renco Mine’s Maramba Stadium, many wondered if the early pace-setters had lost their grip.

The answer came in Masvingo as Yadah ground out a 1-0 win over Masvingo United FC to move onto 37 points and reclaim top spot.

The timing could not have been better. Tenax CS FC, who had taken over at the top, were not in action this week. They sat out on a bye caused by the withdrawal of Tongogara United FC from the league.

While idle, Tenax watched their lead being snuffed out by the Miracle Boys. They now sit 3rd on 35 points, level with Africa Mineral Ventures FC but behind on goal difference.

And what a week it was for AMV. They were the greatest beneficiaries of the weekend’s results. Their 3-0 away win over FC Wangu Mazodze at Mucheke Stadium was clinical, confident, and sent a clear message.

The result lifted Collin Chinyani from 5th to 2nd on 35 points and gave them the best goal difference in the league at plus 20.

Suddenly, the title race looks like a genuine 5-horse contest.

The damage was done further up the table by Deportivo La Murambinda.

The team that started the weekend in 2nd place suffered a devastating 1-0 home loss to Buffaloes FC at Uhera Stadium. It was Murambinda’s second home defeat of the season and it has consequences.

Lovemore Dzoro’s men drop to 5th on 34 points and have now played 18 games, one more than most of their rivals. The Mutare soldiers, meanwhile, will take huge belief from going to Uhera and silencing the crowd.

Green Fuel FC also kept pace. Their 2-0 win over Destiny Stars FC pushed them up to 4th on 34 points. Just 5 points separate 1st from 5th. That tells you everything about how tight this league is with the halfway stage looming.

Further down, the stories were just as telling. Grand Legacy FC’s struggles at Lithium Stadium continued. A 1-0 loss away at Bikita Chida Athletic Club was their second defeat in a row at the stadium this season and sees them slip from 4th to 6th on 32 points.

Willard Katsande’s charges side have now lost three times at the Lithium venue across all competitions this season and this latest setback has some dire repacations for their championship push.

There was joy for Bikita Minerals FC who edged Power FC 3-2 in a thriller, and for Great Zimbabwe University FC who picked up a vital 2-0 win away at Renco Mine FC. Manica Diamonds U19 also got their first win in a while, beating Chivhu FC 1-0, while Four Lions FC and Mutare City Rovers played out a 1-1 draw.

At the bottom, the relegation fight remains desperate. Power FC and Four Lions FC are both stuck on 9 points, with Chivhu FC just above them on 11. Every point from here on will feel like gold.

Comparing Week 17 to Week 18 shows just how much has shifted. Yadah have climbed from 3rd to 1st. AMV have jumped three places from 5th to 2nd. Green Fuel are up two spots to 4th. The fallers tell their own story. Tenax drop from 1st to 3rd without kicking a ball. Murambinda slide from 2nd to 5th. Grand Legacy tumble from 4th to 6th.

What it means is simple. Yadah are back on top but they have no room to breathe. AMV are roaring. Tenax will be hurting after watching from the sidelines. GreenFuel are lurking, and Murambinda need an immediate response.

With one game to go before the season reaches its midpoint, the Pacific Storm ERSL has reminded everyone that no lead is safe and no away fixture is easy.
