Zimbabwe’s Sables may have opened their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign with defeat, but the performance against Tonga offered encouraging signs of resilience and progress as they continue building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Facing a physically powerful and experienced Tongan side, the Sables were tested throughout the contest. Despite the result, Zimbabwe showed commendable determination, refusing to be overwhelmed and continuing to compete with intensity until the final whistle.

The match highlighted the areas where the Sables are continuing to grow, particularly in adapting to the speed and physicality of top-level international rugby. At the same time, there were positive moments that reflected the team’s development under head coach Piet Benade.

Zimbabwe’s defensive commitment and willingness to attack when opportunities arose demonstrated the confidence that has been building within the squad following their recent successes. The experience gained from facing opposition of Tonga’s calibre will be invaluable as the Sables prepare for their remaining Nations Cup fixtures against the USA and Canada.

The tournament represents an important stage in Zimbabwe’s preparation for the Rugby World Cup, providing exposure to high-quality international opposition and helping the squad understand the standards required at the next level.

While the opening result was disappointing, the Sables can take heart from the character they displayed. The challenge now will be to learn from the experience, refine their execution, and carry those lessons into the matches ahead.

With two fixtures still to play, Zimbabwe remains focused on continuing its growth on the international stage and showing that the Sables are capable of competing with strong rugby nations.
