Midlands derby of extremes: Hardrock hunt title, TelOne battle relegation at Chahwanda

Chahwanda Stadium will be the centre of Midlands football on Saturday when title hopefuls Hardrock FC host troubled TelOne FC in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League derby but for very different reasons.

With eight matches left, Hardrock are in a title race while TelOne are fighting to avoid relegation. The hosts sit on 54 points, four behind log leaders Scottland FC on 58 points. On the otherhand, TelOne FC are on 20 points, seven adrift of 14th-placed FC Hunters.

A win over TelOne would reduce the gap between Hardrock and Scottland to one point. The first leg at Ascot Stadium ended in a comprehensive 3-0 win for Hardrock, but form and history suggest Saturday’s derby will be a different contest.

HARDROCK FC BATTLING ON THREE FRONTS

Hardrock FC are chasing on three fronts: the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup and the Chibuku Super Cup. A victory over TelOne would keep them within touching distance of Scottland and pile pressure on the leaders ahead of the run-in.

Chahwanda Stadium has become a fortress, and Kelvin Kaindu will be keen to avoid any slip that could derail their triple charge.

Simply put, Hardrock’s numbers make a strong case. They have 16 wins, a league-high 46 goals scored, and the second-best goal difference of +28. With a maximum 24 points still available, even five wins could keep them in the title hunt to the final day.

Meanwhile, the Wifi Boys are in a desperate fight. Just four wins from their last 27 matches tells the story of a difficult season.

At 16th position with 20 points, the Joel Luphahla-coached side need to start collecting points immediately to enhance their survival chances.

Their -19 goal difference means heavy defeats must be avoided, but with 24 points still to play for, the target of 32 points could be enough to climb out of the drop zone.

History shows teams in the relegation zone in the last eight games often become the most dangerous opponents. With nothing to lose, TelOne are expected to defend deep and look to frustrate a Hardrock side that will be expected to dominate.

DERBY DYNAMICS IN ZIMBABWE

Derbies are rarely decided by the log table, and Hardrock will be wary of complacency. A draw for TelOne would feel like a win in the context of their fight, while a defeat would leave them with an even steeper climb.

For the Kwekwe side, anything less than three points at home would be a setback in the league and a dent to morale ahead of cup commitments.

As the season enters its final stretch, Saturday’s Midlands derby offers a classic tale of two clubs — one chasing glory, the other fighting for its top-flight life.

If Hardrock pass the TelOne test, bigger challenges remain. They still have to face Highlanders FC, Bulawayo Chiefs, MWOS FC, Dynamos, Simba Bhora and FC Platinum.
