Chevrons face must-win battle to keep Tri-Series final hopes alive

Zimbabwe’s hopes of reaching the final of the Namibia T20I Tri-Series have been dealt a serious blow, but the Chevrons still have a path to the decider.

The Chevrons suffered a seven-wicket defeat to South Africa at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground, leaving them bottom of the standings and needing a victory in their final round-robin match against Namibia to keep their hopes alive.

South Africa proved too strong on the day, posting 185 for eight after electing to bat. Lhuan-dre Pretorius was the chief destroyer, smashing 94 from just 51 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and three sixes. Jordan Hermann added 28, while Dewald Brevis contributed 41 as South Africa built a commanding platform.

Zimbabwe’s response never really got going. Sikandar Raza finally found some rhythm with the bat, top-scoring with 45 from 33 balls, while Newman Nyamhuri added a useful 27. However, the Chevrons were eventually bowled out for 142, with Bjorn Fortuin taking four wickets.

There were opportunities to take from the match, particularly in the bowling. Wessly Madhevere claimed three wickets for 20 runs, while Brad Evans picked up two for 33. The absence of Richard Ngarava and the decision to rest Blessing Muzarabani, however, left Zimbabwe without two of their most experienced pace options.

The defeat followed a much more encouraging performance against Namibia, where Zimbabwe held their nerve to secure a five-run victory after posting 190. That result showed that this Chevrons side can compete in this tournament, even if consistency remains the challenge.

The match against Namibia now becomes the biggest game of the campaign.

Zimbabwe currently have two points, the same as Namibia, but their inferior net run-rate leaves them bottom. Namibia sit on -0.325 compared with Zimbabwe’s -1.691, while South Africa have already established themselves at the top with four points.

Zimbabwe also handed opportunities to Kundai Matigimu and Innocent Kaia against South Africa. Matigimu made his T20I debut, while Kaia was brought into the top order, providing valuable experience for the two players despite the difficult result.

The equation is simple: Zimbabwe must beat Namibia to stay alive. If South Africa then defeat Namibia in the final round-robin match, the Chevrons can reach Sunday’s final against the Proteas.

It is certainly not an easy road, but Zimbabwe still have something to fight for. The Namibia victory proved they can get over the line in a tight contest. Now they need to do it again when it matters most.
