Curtains Looming: Jompano’s Manica Diamonds in do-or-die as relegation battle hits boiling point
This will be a decisive weekend at both ends of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League before the international break.
While cameras will naturally drift towards the title fight between Scottland and Hardrock, the real drama with six games to go will be unfolding at the bottom.
Four teams will face the dreaded chop at the end of the season and every point now feels like survival itself. The latest log standings paint a picture of just how tight and brutal this battle has become.
Scottland lead the pack on 58 points from 28 matches, with Hardrock right behind them on 57. Down at the bottom, FC Hunters are sitting precariously just above the drop on 28 points.
They are followed by Agama FC who occupy the last relegation spot on 25 points, TelOne FC on 20 points, Triangle United on 19 points and Manica Diamonds rooted to the bottom also on 19 points but with a vastly inferior goal difference of -29.
MAKE OR BREAK IN THE RELEGATION MIX
Last weekend’s Matchday 28 results did little to ease the pressure for those fighting the chop. Agama gave themselves a massive lifeline with a crucial 1-0 victory over fellow relegation contenders Manica Diamonds.
That result lifted them to 25 points and dragged Manica deeper into trouble. FC Hunters earned a valuable point in a 0-0 draw away at Ngezi Platinum Stars.
Triangle United held Highlanders to a 0-0 stalemate, ZPC Kariba and Simba Bhora also played out a goalless draw, and Chicken Inn and MWOS cancelled each other out.
Hardrock thrashed TelOne 4-1 to keep their title charge alive, while CAPS United and Dynamos shared the spoils in a 1-1 Harare derby.
That sets up a massive relegation six-pointer this weekend as FC Hunters welcome troubled Manica Diamonds to Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.
This fixture could define both clubs’ seasons. For FC Hunters, fresh from their heroic quarter-final penalty shootout triumph over Dynamos in the Chibuku Super Cup, a win would move them further away from Agama and give them breathing space on 31 points.
For Manica Diamonds, who are on a free-fall with a three-match losing streak in the league, it will be curtains for Herbert Maruwa’s men if they lose again. They did not do themselves any favours last week when they lost to direct rivals Agama. It is a fixture loaded with narrative for the Gem Boys.
Despite a solitary win in their last five that briefly raised hopes, they have been in free fall. Their form of three defeats in their last four league outings has left them needing almost maximum points from the remaining six games.
A trip to Rufaro against a Hunters side buoyed by cup success and a resilient draw at Ngezi is as tough as it gets. Maruwa knows that anything less than three points might effectively end their stay in the top flight.
Meanwhile, Agama face the ultimate test of their survival credentials. They travel to Harare where they will face defending champions Scottland under lights at the iconic National Sports Stadium on Sunday at 18:00hrs.
On paper, it looks like a mismatch between a team fighting for the championship on 58 points and a team fighting for its life on 25 points. But Agama will take confidence from last week’s victory over Manica.
They will hope that Scottland, who have drawn ten games already this season, might blink under the pressure of the title race. The rest of Matchday 29 also has huge implications for the bottom half.
TelOne host Ngezi Platinum Stars at Ascot Stadium at 15:00hrs on Saturday in a game TelOne must win to keep their hopes alive on 20 points. Bulawayo Chiefs welcome Triangle United to Luveve Stadium on Sunday in another direct relegation showdown.
Chiefs are on 31 points and not yet safe, while Genesis Mangombe’s Sugar Sugar Boys on 19 points are certainly running out of time. FC Platinum face ZPC Kariba at Mandava Stadium where ZPC on 29 points are just one above Hunters.
Simba Bhora host Chicken Inn at Wadzanayi, MWOS take on CAPS United at Ngoni Stadium, while at the top Highlanders host Hardrock at Barbourfields and Dynamos host Herentals College at Rufaro.
With six games to go and four places to avoid, Matchday 29 is more than just another round of fixtures.
It is a weekend where the relegation battle could claim its first major victims. For teams like Manica Diamonds, TelOne and Triangle United, there is no longer any margin for error.
