Ralph Kawondera once again proved his value to Herentals, scoring the decisive goal as the Students came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over CAPS United at Rufaro Stadium.

The win saw Herentals climb to third place on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table, level on 33 points with CAPS United but ahead on goal difference. Both sides remain seven points behind league leaders Scottland FC.

CAPS United made the brighter start and looked the more threatening side during the opening half. Ishmael Wadi was presented with an excellent opportunity after a clever pass from Tanaka Shandirwa but failed to find the target. Kundai Benyu also came close, firing over from a promising position after being picked out inside the box.

The Green Machine eventually found the breakthrough shortly before the interval. Wadi redeemed himself by confidently converting from the penalty spot to hand the hosts a deserved lead.

However, Herentals responded immediately. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Tawanda Chisi got the final touch on an effort from Eric Dombo to draw the Students level heading into the break.

Coach Paul Benza’s tactical adjustments at half-time transformed the visitors. Herentals emerged with greater energy and control, dominating possession and creating the better chances.

Their persistence was rewarded with 15 minutes remaining. Kawondera, who had been moved from defence into a more advanced role, showed his attacking instincts by calmly finishing from inside the area to complete the comeback and score his 10th goal of the campaign.

The versatile veteran then returned to his defensive duties as Herentals successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

For CAPS United, the defeat continued a worrying run of form, with just one victory in their last eight league matches. Herentals, meanwhile, strengthened their title credentials with another impressive display and a valuable three points.
