CAPS United’s Premier Soccer League title ambitions suffered another setback after they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Triangle United at Rufaro Stadium.

The result leaves Makepekepe without a win in their last four league matches and extends a disappointing run to just one victory in their previous nine outings. They remain third on the table with 34 points, now nine behind leaders Scottland FC, while Triangle stay rooted to the foot of the standings with 11 points from 20 matches.

The hosts made the brighter start and deservedly took the lead after half an hour. Chawanangwa Kaonga won a penalty after being fouled inside the area by Triangle goalkeeper David Bizabani before calmly converting from the spot.

However, CAPS United’s advantage lasted only a few minutes. Triangle produced a flowing move that ended with Aaron Zeka volleying home from Nyasha Chintuli’s inviting cross to level the scores before half-time.

The visitors then stunned the Rufaro crowd on the stroke of the interval. Stephen Zhogi’s overhead kick caused problems for goalkeeper Wallace Magalane, whose misjudgement allowed the ball to find the back of the net. The error prompted CAPS United to introduce Stephen Kwaku for the second half.

Despite increasing the pressure after the restart, CAPS United struggled to break down a determined Triangle defence. Their equaliser eventually arrived in the 77th minute when Kaonga slid in to convert Brett Amidu’s delivery and complete his brace, although the goal was surrounded by controversy after the striker appeared to collide with Bizabani during the finish.

Following the match, CAPS United coach Takesure Chiragwi acknowledged that costly mistakes prevented his side from claiming all three points. While disappointed with the dropped points, he praised his players’ effort and urged them to learn from the errors and focus on the matches ahead.
