Week 18 of the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League has brought significant changes at both ends of the table, with Black Rhinos emerging as the biggest winners of the weekend after reclaiming top spot.

The army side defeated PAM FC 3-1 while closest rivals Harare City suffered a costly 1-0 defeat to G&T Mine. Those contrasting results saw Black Rhinos climb from second to first on 34 points, opening a two-point lead over Harare City, who remain on 32 points.

Ngezi Stars U19 missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on the leading pair after being held to a 1-1 draw by Karoi United. Although they remain third, they move to 29 points and now trail the leaders by five points.

One of the biggest movers in the top half is Chingwere FC. Their impressive 1-0 victory over Golden Eagles on Saturday, coupled with other favourable results, lifted them from seventh to fourth with 27 points. G&T Mine also climbed from eighth to fifth after upsetting Harare City, joining Chingwere on 27 points.

CP Chemicals’ emphatic 4-0 victory over Batanai FC proved equally rewarding. They rose from tenth to sixth on 26 points, while Golden Eagles slipped from fourth to seventh after their defeat. Karoi United remain eighth with 26 points following their draw at Ngezi, while Jumbo Giants dropped from fifth to ninth after losing 1-0 at home to High Range.

The race for the promotion places is now tighter than ever. Only eight points separate leaders Black Rhinos from ninth-placed Jumbo Giants, leaving the title race and promotion battle wide open heading into the second half of the campaign.

In the middle of the table, FC Oden and Chegutu Pirates shared the spoils in a goalless draw, leaving both sides largely unchanged. Cranborne Bullets also remained in the top ten after drawing with Banket United.

At the bottom end, MWOS U19 recorded one of the most important victories of the weekend, defeating Marere FC 2-0. The win lifted them out of the relegation zone from 20th to 18th on goal difference, while High Range also boosted their survival hopes after stunning Jumbo Giants away from home. Those two results pushed Zambezi G & C into the bottom four despite their draw with Shamva Mine.

Marere FC remain rooted to the foot of the table with 14 points after another defeat, while Shamva Mine continue to struggle in 21st place with 17 points. The relegation battle is becoming increasingly intense, with only six points separating 18th-placed MWOS from 22nd-placed Marere.

With 18 rounds completed, the Northern Region Soccer League has become more competitive than ever. Black Rhinos now hold the advantage in the title race, but Harare City, Ngezi Stars U19 and a chasing pack of ambitious clubs remain firmly in contention. At the other end, every point will be crucial as the battle to avoid relegation gathers momentum.
