12 goals in 16 matches: Benjani frets over Bosso strikers

Benjani Mwaruwari is a worried man. The Highlanders FC coach is fretting over his team’s lack of a killer instinct, which he believes has been their Achilles’ heel.

The Undertaker, as Mwaruwari is fondly known, carved out a niche as a deadly striker for Jomo Cosmos in South Africa, AJ Auxerre in France, Portsmouth, and famously Manchester City in England.

However, he has struggled to bring out the best in his strikers this season, with none of them reaching three goals in 16 matches.

Lynoth Chikuhwa was the last veritable marksman to grace Highlanders FC after banging in 17 goals for Bosso during the 2024 season. He switched to Scottland FC and later Chicken Inn FC but he has never been the same.

Mwaruwari has tweaked his strike force, which includes Never Rauzhi, Brighton Ncube, Zambian Isaac Ngoma, Reason Sibanda, Nigerian Benjamin Adeogun and Marvin Sibanda, but all they have managed is a combined 12 goals in 16 matches.

His defense line has performed impressively, but the former Warriors marksman is first to admit that goals make the major difference.

‘WE DO NOT SHOW THE INTENTION TO HURT TEAMS’ SAYS BENJANI MWARUWARI

On Saturday, Mwaruwari watched as his men missed chance after chance, ultimately losing 1-0 to struggling Gweru-based side TelOne FC.

And as they brace for their next midweek assignment on Wednesday against yet another relegation-threatened team, Agama FC, at Barbourfields Stadium, Mwaruwari is fretting.

“Sometimes when you play good football and you do not show the intention to hurt teams, that’s what happens,” Mwaruwari said.

“As a team we worked hard but it is a lesson to my boys that when you get chances you need to punish teams, otherwise in games like this you will always be disappointed.”

As it stands, Bosso sit eighth with 22 points from 16 matches. After the Agama FC test, Bosso face their cross-town rivals on home turf at Barbourfields Stadium.
