Warriors trio set for first Championship showdown as Wolves host Watford

There will be a strong Zimbabwean flavour at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton on Saturday when Wolverhampton Wanderers host Watford, with Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa set to lock horns with compatriot Jordan Zemura.

It will be the first time the Warriors trio face each other in an English Championship match, adding extra spice for Zimbabwean fans to a crucial fixture for both clubs. The England Championship match is scheduled for 16h00 [CAT]].

Wolves go into the game looking to stay in the top seven, sitting just five points adrift of leaders Swansea City, while Watford travel to the Midlands in 20th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

Zemura arrives in high spirits after scoring his first Watford goal in their much-needed 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic last time out – a result that ended a run of four successive defeats and delivered the Hornets’ first clean sheet of the Championship season.

That victory was vital for Alessio Dionisi’s side, who had shipped nine goals in heavy defeats to Burnley and Cardiff City, and had lost four straight away games before the trip to Molineux.

For Wolves, Cesar Peixoto’s side will be looking to bounce back after throwing away a one-goal lead against Portsmouth on Tuesday. Despite sitting in playoff contention, they have now gone nine games in all competitions without scoring more than twice in a match.

The Zimbabwean subplot will be central. Zemura recently returned from injury that saw him miss Zimbabwe’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone, while Munetsi and Chirewa both featured in those games.

Munetsi was in fine form for the Warriors, scoring three goals across the two qualifiers, while Chirewa also got on the scoresheet with one goal. The midfielder also recently scored his first professional goal for Wolves in their hard-fought win over Burnley.

With all three forming the backbone of the current Warriors squad, Saturday’s clash offers a timely gauge of their form.

Wolves have the home advantage, but Watford’s response against Charlton and Zemura’s return to goalscoring form means the odds look even heading into what promises to be an intriguing battle from a Zimbabwean perspective.
