Danny Welbeck will remain at Brighton beyond the current campaign after activating a clause that prolongs his agreement by a further 12 months.
The 35-year-old attacker had been approaching the end of his existing deal, which was set to conclude this season. However, the additional year has now been formally triggered.
Although Welbeck signed a fresh two-year contract in 2024, the presence of a further option was not disclosed at that time.
Speculation had surrounded his future due to the contractual situation, but the latest development ensures he will continue with the Seagulls next term.
Strong form boosts England hopes
Welbeck has enjoyed an impressive season and leads Brighton’s scoring charts with 11 goals from 30 outings.
His most recent strike came in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest, further underlining his influence in the side.
The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has subsequently emerged as a potential candidate for an England recall ahead of the summer World Cup.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted before the November qualifiers that he had seriously considered including Welbeck in his squad. Tuchel is scheduled to announce his next selection later this month, which will be his final squad before confirming the World Cup group.
Key role under Hurzeler
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has recently expressed his intention to keep the experienced striker at the club.
Welbeck initially arrived at Brighton in October 2020 following his departure from Watford.
Since making the move, he has registered 48 goals in 191 appearances for the club, establishing himself as an important figure in the team.
