Valencia CF drew 1-1 with Rayo Vallecano on Thursday evening in their Matchday 36 La Liga fixture at Mestalla. Diego López scored for the hosts in a match that featured chances at both ends and a dramatic missed penalty in the first half.

The atmosphere inside Mestalla was intense from the opening moments, with the crowd loudly backing the home team before kick-off. Valencia responded quickly through Javi Guerra, whose long-range effort forced Batalla into an early save.

Rayo Vallecano soon threatened on the counterattack, but Dimitrievski reacted well to clear a dangerous square pass inside the area. The game continued at a high tempo as both sides looked to attack quickly whenever possession changed hands.

Penalty drama and quick response before break

The visitors were awarded a penalty after Pacha became involved in another attacking move inside the box. Renzo attempted to intervene, but his clearance struck the Rayo player, leading to the decision. Nteka stepped up to take the kick, although Dimitrievski guessed correctly and watched the ball strike the left post, prompting huge celebrations from the Valencia supporters.

Javi Guerra later came close to opening the scoring after driving forward from midfield into space created by the opposing defense. His shot narrowly missed the target after brushing the outside of the right post.

Despite Valencia’s opportunities, Rayo Vallecano eventually moved ahead through Lejeune, who scored with a header following a corner kick. Shortly after the goal, Renzo was forced off because of discomfort in his hamstring after an intense phase of play.

The equaliser arrived before half-time when Javi Guerra launched a counterattack and picked out Luis Rioja with a pass into space. Although Mendy cut out the first opportunity, Valencia continued the move, and Diego López converted from close range after receiving another excellent delivery from Guerra.

Valencia push without finding a winner

Early in the second half, Javi Guerra nearly capitalised on a mistake during Batalla’s build-up play, but his first-time attempt failed to hit the target. Valencia coach Carlos Corberán later introduced Sadiq, Ramazani, and Ugrinic in a triple substitution, while Jesús Vázquez also entered the match after Gayà was unable to continue.

As the half progressed, the contest became more balanced, with Valencia enjoying more possession while Rayo Vallecano stayed compact defensively and limited spaces around their penalty area.

The hosts continued pressing until stoppage time and almost secured victory through Tárrega, whose header from a Ugrinic corner came close to producing a second goal. Following the draw, Valencia will now prepare for Sunday’s away match against Real Sociedad in San Sebastián.
