TelOne FC close in on Silas Songani in bid to turn fortunes around

Troubled TelOne FC is set to sign 2013 Soccer Star of the Year runner-up Silas Songani, in hopes that he will help turn the club’s fortunes around.

Songani, a tried and tested attacker, has been training with the Gweru-based side for a month and is now a top priority to be registered during the mid-season transfer window.

He was last on the books of Icelandic side IF Vestri, having made his name at Harare City before moving to Denmark, where he had stints at Sønderjyske Fodbold, FC Sydvest 05, and Elverum Football. He also played for FC Platinum.

With 11 national team caps under his belt, the 36-year-old brings leadership and a stable voice in the dressing room, which is currently captained by Frank Makarati.

TelOne are seeking a jumpstart after Herbert Maruwa’s exit from the Gweru-based side, with veteran coach Saul Chaminuka at the helm.

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Hardrock FC at home, Ascot stadium, was a rude awakening of the task ahead of Chaminuka at The Wifi Boys. As it stands, they are 16th on the table with six points on their tally.

ALL EYES ON CHAPUNGU’S EDWARD WATSON

Meanwhile, TelOne FC are also angling for the free-scoring Chapungu FC striker Edward Watson, who has been the mainstay at the leading Central Region Soccer League side.

On Sunday, Watson scored his ninth goal in seven matches, as they kept their winning form beating promotion contenders Kwekwe United at Ascot Stadium.

As it stands, Chapungu have collected 19 points from the seven matches, of which Watson has been their key protagonist. Watson was named April Player of the Month and Top goalscorer of the Month.
