Southampton climbed into sixth place in the Championship standings after a convincing win over fellow play-off contenders Wrexham at Stok Cae Ras, moving two points clear of their rivals while still having a game in hand. The visitors wasted no time asserting control, with early goals from Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes putting them firmly in charge of proceedings.
Despite making six changes following their FA Cup quarter-final victory over Arsenal just days earlier, Southampton began with intensity and purpose. They came close twice in quick succession, striking the woodwork through Cyle Larin and Finn Azaz, but quickly turned pressure into reward when Matsuki fired low into the corner after being picked out by Azaz.
The second goal arrived soon after, as a deflected free-kick from James Bree dropped kindly for Downes, who struck cleanly from close range to double the lead. Wrexham struggled to cope with the early onslaught, while the travelling supporters enjoyed a dominant display from their side.
Wrexham respond but Saints stay in control
After a difficult opening half-hour, the hosts began to find their rhythm and nearly pulled one back when Nathan Broadhead’s header hit the post. Moments later, they did reduce the deficit, as Josh Windass calmly finished following a flick-on from Kieffer Moore after a long ball forward from Arthur Okonkwo.
The second half proved more balanced, with both teams creating opportunities. Okonkwo denied Larin early on, while at the other end Max Cleworth saw an effort deflected wide. However, just as Wrexham looked to build momentum, a misplaced pass from Lewis O’Brien was intercepted by Larin, who surged forward and finished decisively to restore Southampton’s two-goal advantage.
Wrexham continued to push, coming close again when Moore headed against the post from close range, but they were unable to close the gap further as the visitors managed the game effectively.
Late goals seal emphatic victory
Southampton put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages, with substitutes playing a key role. Ross Stewart headed home from a Welington free-kick before Azaz capitalised on defensive confusion to add a fifth goal shortly after.
The result marked a fifth consecutive win for Southampton and extended their unbeaten league run to 13 matches, strengthening their position in the race for a play-off place. Their early dominance and clinical finishing ultimately proved too much for a Wrexham side that showed resilience but could not recover from a poor start.
After the match, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson admitted his side had been punished for their mistakes, noting they could not afford to offer chances to a team of Southampton’s quality. Meanwhile, Southampton boss Tonda Eckert highlighted the importance of a fresh lineup and praised his team’s early control and disciplined structure throughout the match.
