Zimbabwe’s Sables edged Namibia 36-33 in a thrilling unofficial international Test at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday, holding their nerve to secure a hard-fought victory in front of the home crowd. The match marked the return of international rugby to the iconic venue after a lengthy absence.

The Sables made a strong start, building a 26-14 half-time lead through tries from Liam Larkan, Darrell Makwasha, Aiden Burnett and Godfrey Muzanargwo. David Hayes contributed with the boot as Zimbabwe looked in control heading into the break.

However, Namibia responded strongly in the second half, taking advantage of defensive lapses and penalties to put the hosts under pressure. The visitors crossed for five tries, including a penalty try, and threatened to snatch victory in the closing stages.

Zimbabwe captain Hilton Mudariki stepped up with a crucial try, while Hayes added a penalty to help the Sables hold on for a narrow three-point win. The hosts also had Dylan Utete and Godwin Mangenje sent to the sin bin during a tense contest.

The victory extends Zimbabwe’s winning run against Namibia to three consecutive matches, following their memorable 30-28 triumph in the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup final that secured qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

While the result will provide a confidence boost, the Sables will know there is still work to do, particularly in their defensive organisation and set-piece execution. Head coach Pieter Benade will nevertheless take encouragement from the team’s attacking threat, fighting spirit and the opportunity to give locally based players valuable international experience.

With the Nations Cup in England approaching in November, the Sables will look to build on this performance as they continue preparing for their return to the Rugby World Cup in Australia next year.
