The Zimbabwe Sables have departed for the United States ahead of the 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup, where they will face three formidable opponents over the next three weeks in what promises to be one of their biggest tests since qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The African champions begin their campaign against Tonga in Denver on 4 July before taking on hosts USA in Charlotte on 11 July. Their final fixture will see them cross the border into Canada to face the Canadians in Winnipeg on 18 July.

The squad has received a timely boost with the return of experienced fly-half Ian Prior, who missed Zimbabwe’s recent fixtures against Zambia and South Africa ‘A’. Prior’s game management, tactical kicking and leadership will be invaluable against three physically imposing Tier Two nations.

Also returning is winger Matthew McNab after completing his club commitments in the United Kingdom. His pace, attacking instincts and experience at the highest level add further quality to an already talented squad.

For head coach Piet Benade, having a near full-strength squad available is a welcome sight after recent matches were used to test combinations and give opportunities to locally based players. With the majority of Zimbabwe’s overseas professionals now reunited with the squad, the Sables head into the tournament with renewed confidence.

The Nations Cup presents a perfect opportunity for Zimbabwe to measure themselves against established international opposition as preparations continue for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Every match will provide valuable experience and a chance to build momentum against quality teams.

The road ahead will be demanding, but the Sables have earned their place on this stage. With a full squad assembled and belief continuing to grow within the camp, Zimbabwe will be determined to showcase the progress that has seen them crowned Rugby Africa champions and return home with performances to be proud of.
