Zimbabwe’s Sables continued their steady preparations for a massive international season with a hard-fought 17-7 victory over Zambia in the second leg of the Zambezi Challenge at Hartsfield Stadium in Bulawayo. The result not only secured regional bragging rights but also provided another valuable step forward as the team gears up for bigger tests ahead, including a highly anticipated clash against South Africa ‘A’.

The match marked the return of international rugby to Hartsfield after an eight-year absence, with supporters turning out in strong numbers to welcome the Sables back to Bulawayo. Although the first half remained scoreless in a tense and physical contest, Zimbabwe eventually found another gear in the second period to pull away from the Copper Eagles.

The fixture formed an important part of head coach Piet Benade’s long-term preparations as Zimbabwe continues building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the upcoming Nations Series. The coaching staff have placed strong emphasis on squad depth, combinations, and exposing younger players to competitive international rugby.

Facing South Africa ‘A’ next month will provide the Sables with a completely different level of challenge and intensity. However, performances like the one against Zambia show a team growing in confidence, resilience, and tactical maturity.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union also highlighted the importance of these regional fixtures in strengthening the team ahead of a demanding international calendar. Backing from sponsors and supporters continues to grow as belief around the Sables reaches new heights following their recent Rugby Africa Cup success.
