Phil Foden has agreed in principle to a new four-year contract with Manchester City, extending his time at the club well beyond his current deal, which had been set to end next summer. The proposed terms would keep the 25-year-old at the Etihad until 2030, while also including the possibility of an additional year.

The new arrangement underlines the determination of both player and club to continue their partnership despite a difficult spell for the England international. It represents a major show of faith as City look to secure one of their most important homegrown talents for the long term.

Challenging period on the pitch

Although Foden remains a key figure for City, his recent performances have fallen below his usual standards. The midfielder has not found the net since 14 December and has endured a frustrating run in front of goal.

He was used from the bench during Monday’s dramatic draw at Everton, a six-goal contest that left Pep Guardiola’s side trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by five points, though City still hold a game in hand in the title race.

England’s future under scrutiny

Foden’s focus will also be on earning his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup. Competition for places remains intense, and his position is not fully secure.

Tuchel stated last month that inclusion in the final 24-man group is not certain, despite Foden being the only player to start both matches in England’s final training camp before the tournament.

From academy prospect to City mainstay

Since making his senior debut at 17 under Guardiola, Foden has developed into one of Manchester City’s most recognizable figures. Over the years, he has accumulated 365 appearances for the club and played a central role in a period filled with success.

His honours include six Premier League crowns, a Champions League triumph, and two FA Cup victories, achievements that highlight both his longevity and influence since emerging from City’s youth system.
