Paris Saint-Germain clinched the Ligue 1 championship by defeating nearest challengers Lens at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, sealing the trophy with one match still to play. Entering the contest knowing a draw would be enough to finish beyond Lens’ reach, PSG instead delivered victory to confirm their dominance once again.

The result ensured the Paris club collected the French title for a 14th time, extending their national record, while also marking a fifth straight league triumph. Saint-Étienne remains the second-most decorated side in the competition with 10 championships.

Key goals settle the contest

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG on course before substitute Ibrahim Mbaye added another, with both strikes proving decisive in the encounter between the division’s leading sides. Their contributions wrapped up the championship race and ended Lens’ hopes of closing the gap at the summit.

Lens had started the match six points behind and needed to keep the title race alive, but PSG’s success removed any remaining doubt over the destination of the trophy.

Luis Enrique praises difficult campaign

Manager Luis Enrique described this success as the toughest of his tenure, despite PSG’s continued domestic superiority since his arrival in 2023. He highlighted Lens’ strong performances throughout the campaign as a major reason the battle proved so demanding.

According to Enrique, several stretches of Lens’ season, including notable winning runs and important victories, forced his side to remain focused until the closing stages of the title race.

Attention turns to finals and final fixtures

PSG, who have now lifted the Ligue 1 trophy in 12 of the past 14 seasons, will complete their league campaign away to rivals Paris FC on Sunday. Their season also includes a Champions League final against Premier League leaders Arsenal on 30 May, where they will attempt to defend their European title.

Lens still have an opportunity for silverware despite missing out on the league, with a Coupe de France final against Nice scheduled for 22 May.
