PSG survive Bayern comeback in nine-goal Champions League thriller
Paris Saint-Germain claimed a narrow advantage over Bayern Munich after an extraordinary 5-4 victory in a Champions League semi-final first leg packed with drama, controversy, and attacking brilliance at Parc des Princes. In a clash between the competition’s two most prolific sides this season, the French champions surged into a commanding position before Bayern’s late rally ensured the battle for a place in the final remains finely balanced ahead of the return match in Germany on 6 May.
The game erupted from the outset and quickly delivered on its billing. Bayern struck first when Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot after Luis Diaz was brought down by William Pacho, giving the Bundesliga champions an early edge. PSG, however, responded with authority as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled in an excellent finish after cutting inside from the left before Joao Neves nodded home to turn the score around.

Kvaratskhelia once again proved central to PSG’s attacking threat, continuing a remarkable European run since his arrival in January 2025. Dembele, too, reinforced his importance with another influential knockout-stage display, underlining the firepower that has driven PSG’s title defence.
Bayern fight back to stay alive
Despite appearing close to collapse, Bayern responded impressively when Dayot Upamecano flicked it in to reduce the deficit. That goal initially seemed little more than consolation, but the German champions continued to press and were rewarded again when Kane produced an excellent pass for Diaz, who finished clinically into the far corner.
Those late strikes transformed the complexion of the tie, cutting PSG’s advantage to a single goal and giving Bayern renewed belief before returning to Munich. Having already been involved in dramatic quarter-final encounters with Real Madrid, Bayern once more showed resilience and attacking quality on Europe’s biggest stage.
Their formidable trio of Kane, Olise, and Diaz again underlined why Bayern remain dangerous opponents, with the combined output of that front line now surpassing 100 goals in all competitions this season. While defensive vulnerabilities proved costly in Paris, their attacking power means hopes of reaching the final remain very much alive.
Semifinal remains finely poised
For PSG, this match showcased both their brilliance and their vulnerability. Their relentless attacking display highlighted why they are pursuing consecutive Champions League crowns, a feat only previously achieved by Real Madrid, but conceding four times after establishing such control may leave concerns before a daunting trip to Bavaria.
Bayern, meanwhile, can draw confidence not only from their comeback but also from the knowledge that they remain in contention for a Treble, having already secured the Bundesliga title and reached the German Cup final. Their ability to recover from a seemingly hopeless position ensures the second leg promises another enthralling chapter.
