Zimbabwe’s men’s volleyball team clinched gold at the CAVB Zone VI Qualifiers over the weekend, overcoming a spirited Zambian side 3-2 in a nerve-shredding final at Sunrise Sports Club to book their place at the CAVB LA28 Olympic Qualifiers.

The victory caps a remarkable campaign for the home side, who showcased tremendous composure under pressure to edge their fierce rivals in a contest that had the Harare crowd on the edge of their seats.

It was a mixed bag for Team Zimbabwe, however, as the women’s team fought gallantly but fell short against a formidable Zambian outfit. The ladies settled for silverware after a valiant effort, but their qualification dream was dashed by a Zambian side that proved too strong on the day.

Speaking to Fanzonezw , Zimbabwe captain Nigel Kadumba reflected on the intensity of the contest and what this qualification means for the nation. The skipper revealed that morale within the camp remained high throughout the match, and even under immense pressure, the team stood united with a clear mindset they would make their opponents work for every point, but victory was non-negotiable.

Kadumba was full of praise for the Harare crowd, whose unwavering support proved decisive in turning the tide during difficult moments. The fans gave the team power when heads dropped, and that energy was used to full advantage as the boys kept pushing until they finally came to the party and delivered when it mattered most.

For Kadumba, however, this gold medal is just the beginning. He believes the sky is the limit for Zimbabwe volleyball, and the team will continue raising the flag high on the continental stage. To the young boys watching and dreaming of one day wearing the national colours, the captain had a simple but powerful message: hard work yields good results. He urged them to put in the work when no one is watching and always aim to add value to the team.

Head coach Itsanang Abu-busutu echoed his captain’s sentiments, acknowledging the achievement while stressing that there is still plenty of room for growth. He admitted that the team must improve, particularly in skills development and technical aspects, as they now prepare to compete at a much higher level in the CAVB LA28 Olympic Qualifiers.

The coach also highlighted the advantage of playing at home, noting that the fans played a pivotal role in lifting the team when they were down. Their relentless cheering spurred the boys on until they delivered the performance that secured gold.

With qualification secured, Zimbabwe will now turn their attention to the CAVB LA28 Olympic Qualifiers, where they will face stiff competition from the continent’s elite. The challenge will be significantly tougher, but this team has proven they thrive against the odds.
