MCM Estates NRSL returns with midweek action as second half of the season gets underway
The race for promotion and the fight against relegation resume this week as the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League returns from its mid-season break with an intriguing round of Matchday 22 midweek fixtures.
After 21 rounds of football, the league table remains delicately poised, with several clubs still firmly in contention for the championship while others are separated by just a handful of points in the race for a Top 8 finish. At the opposite end of the table, the relegation battle promises to be just as fierce, making every point crucial as the second half of the season begins.
League leaders Black Rhinos FC head into the restart sitting comfortably at the summit with 41 points, having suffered just two defeats all season. Their remarkable defensive record of conceding only eight goals underlines why they have been the benchmark of consistency.
However, the title race is far from over. Harare City FC and G & T Mine FC are both five points adrift on 36 points, ready to capitalise on any slip-up by the leaders. Fourth-placed Ngezi Stars U19 remain within striking distance on 33 points, while Golden Eagles (31), CP Chemicals (31), Cranborne Bullets (30) and Chingwere FC (29) complete a tightly contested Top 8.
Just outside the Top 8, Jumbo Giants (28), FC Oden (27), High Range (27) and Karoi United (27) remain firmly in the hunt, meaning the race for the Super 8 could change dramatically over the coming gameweek.
Top three face important tests
Second-placed Harare City begin the second half with a tricky away trip to MWOS U19, who occupy 14th position on 26 points. Despite their inconsistent campaign, MWOS have shown they are capable of upsetting the league’s biggest sides and will be eager to restart on a positive note.
Third-placed G & T Mine also face a potentially difficult away assignment against Pam FC. While Pam sit 18th with 23 points, they have everything to play for as they seek to move away from the relegation zone.
League leaders Black Rhinos will be favourites when they host Batanai FC at Commando Barracks. The army side will be aiming to protect their five-point advantage, while Batanai, currently 19th with 23 points, desperately need points to ease their relegation fears.
Perhaps the standout fixture of the round sees Golden Eagles host CP Chemicals in a clash between fifth and sixth.
Both clubs are level on 31 points, making this one of the biggest matches of the week. Victory for either side could strengthen their grip on a Top 8 place, while defeat could allow the chasing pack to close the gap.
Seventh-placed Cranborne Bullets (30) travel to Karoi United, who are only three points behind in 12th. A home victory for Karoi would significantly tighten the race for the Top 8.
Meanwhile, eighth-placed Chingwere FC (29) welcome Black Mambas, knowing that a win would help them keep the chasing clubs at bay.
Just outside the Top 8, Jumbo Giants host Banket United in another crucial encounter. Jumbo sit ninth on 28 points, while Banket are only two points further back in 15th, highlighting just how competitive the middle of the table has become.
Battle at the bottom intensifies
The second half also begins with crucial fixtures involving teams fighting to avoid relegation.
Bottom side Marere FC entertain fellow strugglers Shamva Mine in what could prove to be one of the most important matches of the season for both clubs. Marere have accumulated just 16 points, while Shamva sit one place above the relegation zone with 21 points.
Elsewhere, Zambezi G & C host Chegutu Pirates, with both clubs desperate to build momentum. Zambezi sit 20th on 22 points, while Pirates are 16th on 25 points and could create valuable breathing space with an away victory.
High Range and FC Oden, separated only by goal difference on 27 points, also meet in a contest that could propel the winner closer to the Top 8 places.
Ngezi Stars U19 will be looking to cement fourth place when they host Rangers FC, while Rangers know a positive result could lift them further away from the relegation zone.
With only five points separating the top three and several clubs locked in a tense relegation battle, the return of the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League promises an exciting second half of the season.
Momentum will become increasingly important from this point onwards. Every victory could transform a team’s campaign, while every dropped point may prove costly in the race for promotion, the battle for a Top 8 finish and the fight to retain Division One status.
