MCM Estates NRSL match day 23: Rhinos look to tighten grip as title race intensifies

The MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League returns with a full midweek Matchday 23 programme today and tomorrow, with crucial points at stake at both ends of the table.

League leaders Black Rhinos remain the team to beat after opening up an eight-point lead at the summit of the table.

The army side tops the standings with 44 points from 22 matches, boasting the league’s best defensive record after conceding just eight goals all season. Rhinos will only be in action on Thursday when they host Cranborne Bullets, knowing another victory would move them another step closer to Castle Lager Premier Soccer League promotion.

Behind them, the battle for second place is heating up. Ngezi Stars U19, Harare City, and G&T Mining are all locked on 36 points, with goal difference separating the three sides.

Every match from now on carries huge significance as the chasing pack looks to keep pressure on the leaders while also protecting their own promotion hopes.

Harare City face a difficult away trip to CP Chemicals, who are sixth with 32 points and still firmly in the promotion conversation. A win for the hosts could see them close the gap on the top four, while City cannot afford another slip-up after losing ground in recent weeks.

Third-placed Harare City’s rivals, G&T Mining, will also be aiming for maximum points when they welcome Jumbo Giants on Thursday. Jumbo sit eighth on 31 points and are only five points behind second place, making this another fixture with major implications.

Ngezi U19 host Banket United hoping to strengthen their grip on second place, while fifth-placed Golden Eagles entertain Chegutu Pirates looking to climb even closer to the top four.

Another intriguing encounter sees Chingwere host bottom side Marere FC. Chingwere occupy seventh place on 32 points, and victory could lift them into the promotion race, depending on results elsewhere.

Elsewhere, Karoi United take on Highrange in a mid-table clash, Black Mambas host Zambezi G&C, Batanai welcome Shamva Mine, and PAM FC face MWOS U19.

The Young Punters will be oozing with confidence, having completed a double over Harare City as well as booking their place in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup round of 16.

On Thursday, attention will also turn to Rangers against FC Oden, with Oden looking to improve on their 12th-place standing despite having a game in hand following their abandoned fixture.
