Mavhurume strikes on debut as Gem Boys dent Triangle’s survival hopes

Mid-season signing Carlos Mavhurume announced himself in Gem Boys colours with the goal that could define Manica Diamonds’ season.

The defensive midfielder scored in the 73rd minute as Herbert Maruwa’s charges beat Triangle United 1-0 in a relegation blockbuster at Sakubva Stadium yesterday.

It was a match both teams desperately needed, with four teams set for relegation at the end of the season.

The “six pointer” delivered extra pressure, and the Gem Boys delivered when it mattered most.

The win saw Manica Diamonds open a four-point gap over Triangle and revived their fight for survival.

Speaking to Fanzone in an exclusive interview, Mavhurume was a pleased man. “The win was a team effort,” he said, adding that “both teams really needed to win as they are all in the relegation fight and that too provided an extra layer of pressure in the game as it was a relegation six pointer.”

Mavhurume joined the Gem Boys from Simba Bhora FC during the mid-season window.

He has previously turned out for CAPS United FC, Herentals FC and Ngezi Platinum FC.

The defence hardman also had a special message for the Manica faithful. “I just want to thank the Manica Diamonds supporters. Your support means everything to us. We promise you that we will do everything possible to survive the dreaded chop and keep top-flight football in Mutare,” added Mavhurume.

With 25 matches played, Agama FC sit 15th on 22 points. TelOne FC are 16th on 20 points.

Manica Diamonds FC have climbed to 17th on 19 points. Triangle United FC remain anchored at the bottom in 18th place on 15 points.

Agama, TelOne and Manica Diamonds all won their matches over the weekend, which was a major disadvantage to Triangle.

For Mavhurume and the Gem Boys, one goal, three points, and belief restored.

The fight to beat the drop is officially on.
