Manchester City goalkeeper Trafford calls season a “learning experience”

James Trafford has described the current campaign as a valuable but challenging period, admitting his return to Manchester City did not unfold as he had hoped. The 23-year-old rejoined the club from Burnley in the summer and began the season as the starting goalkeeper, featuring in the opening three Premier League fixtures.
His role changed significantly later in the transfer window when manager Pep Guardiola brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. Since then, Trafford has largely been restricted to appearances in domestic cup competitions rather than league matches.
The decision to return to City came despite interest elsewhere. The club had retained the right to match offers after his 2023 departure, and Newcastle United had a bid accepted last July. Trafford ultimately chose a move back to the Etihad Stadium, though he now acknowledges it has not produced the outcome he anticipated.
Reflecting on the season, he explained that inconsistent playing time has made it an up-and-down experience. Nevertheless, he has focused on maintaining a positive mindset, aiming to improve daily and ensure the situation does not affect his overall well-being or confidence.
Learning curve and future uncertainty
Trafford emphasized that the campaign has forced him to adapt and grow, calling it an important learning phase in his development. Despite limited minutes, he has concentrated on working hard in training and making incremental progress.
In January, Guardiola suggested the goalkeeper’s situation could change in the summer, describing it as “special” and leaving open the possibility of a move. Reports have since indicated that Aston Villa, currently competing in the Europa League semifinals, is interested in signing him.
While his long-term future remains unclear, Trafford continues to approach each day with the intention of improving and staying ready for opportunities when they arise. He has stressed that maintaining happiness and a strong mentality has been just as important as his on-field development during this period.
Impact in cup competitions
Although his league involvement has been limited, Trafford has contributed in key cup matches. He helped City secure victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley by keeping a clean sheet.
He is also expected to start in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton, having played a decisive role in the previous round. In that match, he saved a penalty from Mohamed Salah during the win over Liverpool.
Trafford admitted that high-stakes matches bring added enjoyment, though he acknowledged results shape that feeling. With cup competitions offering his primary playing time, each fixture carries extra importance, as elimination would leave him without regular opportunities to feature.
He also noted that this rotational role is new to him, but the team’s deep runs in both domestic cups have at least ensured consistent involvement across the season.
International ambition and team goals
Despite his reduced club role, Trafford earned his senior debut for the England national football team in a friendly draw against the Uruguay national football team last month. With the World Cup approaching this summer, he hopes to secure a place in the squad.
He acknowledged that his chances depend largely on performing well in the limited matches he is given, focusing on delivering strong displays whenever selected.
At club level, City’s season remains highly successful. A recent 1-0 victory over Burnley lifted them to the top of the table for the first time since the opening weekend. Having already won the Carabao Cup, the team is still competing on multiple fronts and aiming for another domestic treble under Guardiola.
Trafford expressed belief in the squad’s ability to achieve that goal, highlighting the collective confidence within the team. While he continues to navigate a difficult personal season, he remains committed to contributing whenever called upon.
