Gibbs-White faces defining month in race for World Cup spot

Morgan Gibbs-White has given his hopes of reaching England’s World Cup squad a timely boost, underlined by his hat-trick against Burnley. The Nottingham Forest midfielder has been one of the standout performers in recent weeks, scoring eight times across his last 13 appearances. Since the beginning of March, no Premier League player has found the net more often than his six goals in that period.

Despite that surge, he was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man squad for recent friendlies against Japan and Uruguay. That decision highlighted how competitive the race remains for attacking midfield roles, particularly the number 10 position. Still, his current form has kept him firmly in the conversation as the deadline for squad selection approaches.

England must finalize their World Cup squad by 30 May, with just under two months remaining until their opening match against Croatia. That leaves Gibbs-White a narrow window to strengthen his case and potentially force his way into contention.

While his scoring form is impressive, selection will depend on whether he can maintain this level and produce something exceptional in the final stretch of the season.

Competition remains fierce for England’s attacking role

Although highly regarded within England’s setup due to his youth achievements, Gibbs-White remains behind several established names in Tuchel’s hierarchy. He played a part in England’s Under-17 World Cup triumph in 2017 and later won the European Championship with the Under-21 side, but those successes have not yet translated into a consistent senior role.

His senior international experience has been limited. Since making his debut in September 2024, he has earned six caps but accumulated just 89 minutes of playing time. His last appearance came in October during a 3-0 win over Wales, indicating he has yet to secure the manager’s full trust.

The battle for the number 10 role is particularly intense. Players such as Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham were all selected ahead of him in the latest squad, reflecting both their standing and the depth of options available.

Even so, Gibbs-White’s consistent involvement at club level stands out. He has played over 2,800 minutes this season, more than many of his rivals, emphasizing his importance to Nottingham Forest.

Numbers highlight strengths and limitations

Statistically, Gibbs-White compares well in certain areas but lags in others. With 12 league goals, he is among the top English scorers in the Premier League, only trailing Brighton’s Danny Welbeck. His output surpasses that of some competitors, although factors such as penalties and recent form affect those comparisons.

In chance creation, only Foden and Bellingham produce more opportunities per 90 minutes, with Gibbs-White averaging 1.4. However, his expected assist figures are lower, suggesting a gap between creation and final output.

His involvement in attacking zones is relatively limited. He averages 3.5 touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes, with only Eze registering fewer among the group. Additionally, his ball-carrying numbers and defensive contributions rank lowest, reflecting either tactical demands or team structure.

Shot volume is another area where he trails. Alongside Rogers, he records the fewest attempts per match, while Palmer leads that category. These metrics illustrate a player contributing effectively but not dominating across all facets.

Journey at Forest and belief in his ability

Gibbs-White joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 from Wolves in a deal that could reach £42.5 million, a transfer that initially raised questions due to his limited starting experience. Under Steve Cooper, he played a key role in securing Premier League survival and later helped the club achieve a seventh-place finish.

This season, he has again been central to Forest’s campaign, contributing important goals as the team battles to avoid relegation. Notable moments include scoring in a draw against Manchester City and a vital victory at Tottenham.

Those who have worked closely with him have long believed in his potential. Former Wolves technical director Scott Sellars highlighted his attitude and quality from a young age, noting comparisons with top-level players and emphasizing his drive to influence games.

With 15 goals in all competitions, this has become the most productive season of his career. Sellars believes his performances warrant consideration for the World Cup, particularly given his ability to deliver decisive moments in tight matches.

Late push could still change the picture

As England’s squad deadline approaches, Gibbs-White remains an outsider but not without hope. His recent performances have strengthened his case, yet the competition ahead of him remains strong and established.

A place in the final squad may depend on maintaining his scoring run while also benefiting from changes elsewhere, such as injuries or dips in form among rivals. The expectation is that something extraordinary may be required to secure selection.

Even so, his progress this season has reinforced his credentials, and he continues to position himself as a viable option. Whether that proves enough for a World Cup call-up will become clear in the coming weeks.
