Katsande’s coaching debut: Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star takes up Division One gig

Former Warriors captain Willard Katsande has joined Rangers FC in Zimbabwe’s Northern Region Soccer League as their new head coach on an undisclosed deal — his first coaching gig in Zimbabwe.

The former Kaizer Chiefs captain and Zimbabwe international will start his new role on March 10, ahead of the league’s March 14 kickoff.

Katsande, who holds a CAF C license, is looking to rise through the coaching ranks, with future targets including the PSL and Zimbabwe national team.

His agent, Kuda Garufu, says Katsande is taking a calculated step by starting in the lower tier. “We wrapped up the deal on Thursday. It’s a good starting place for him, as we also target the PSL and eventually the national team,” Garufu told Fanzone.

Katsande plans to further his coaching credentials with a CAF B course in 2026. He’s also running Kitoko Soccer School, which has produced players for Zimbabwe’s PSL.

Ultimately, he aims to coach the Zimbabwe national team, but is focused on steady progress, starting with Rangers FC.

Katsande is still highly regarded in SA for his time at Kaizer Chiefs (2011-2020). He made over 300 appearances, won two PSL titles (2012/13, 2014/15) and a Nedbank Cup, and was named Kaizer Chiefs Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Season in 2014
