Coventry City confirmed their place back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001 following a 1-1 draw away to Blackburn Rovers in the Championship. Although they struggled for large parts of the match, the single point proved sufficient to achieve promotion.

Blackburn took the lead shortly after the break when Ryōya Morishita scored in the 54th minute, putting the home side in control. Coventry, however, responded late on, with Bobby Thomas finding the equalizer six minutes from time to spark celebrations among their supporters.

The result ensured Coventry’s return to the top flight after more than two decades, marking a significant achievement for the club under Frank Lampard.

A strong season under Lampard delivers top-two finish

The draw left Coventry 11 points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town and 13 ahead of Millwall in third, confirming their position in the automatic promotion places. In the Championship, the top two teams go up directly, while those finishing between third and sixth enter the playoffs for the final promotion spot.

Throughout the campaign, Lampard’s side have been among the most consistent teams, combining the league’s most effective attack with the strongest defensive record. This balance has played a key role in securing their place at the top end of the table.

Their sustained performances over the season made them strong contenders for promotion, and they ultimately delivered on that promise.

Historic return marks new chapter for Coventry

Coventry previously spent 34 consecutive years in the top division between 1967 and 2001. Despite that long stay, their only major honor remains the FA Cup triumph in 1987.

This promotion represents a return to familiar territory after a lengthy absence, offering the club another opportunity to compete at the highest level.

For Blackburn, the result leaves them in 16th position, sitting five points above the relegation zone and three places clear of danger as the season continues.
