Chirewa reacts after match-winner for Wolves: “I’ve been waiting for this moment”

Tawanda Chirewa has reacted to his match-winning goal for EFL Championship side Wolves saying he has been waiting for this moment after scoring his first professional goal to fire the team to victory against Burnley.

The Warriors attacker came off the bench at Turf Moor and settled a tough Championship contest after racing onto a pass from Mateus Mane before seeing his effort loop over the goalkeeper and into the net to seal a 2-1 win for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

WHAT TAWANDA CHIREWA SAID ABOUT THE MATCH WINNER

It was a big result for Wolves after back-to-back defeats this week, and Chirewa described it as an amazing feeling. Chirewa was on cloud nine after the goal. Marshall Munetsi was also on parade as Wolves registered their fifth win of the season.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I’m just happy that the team won today and got back on the right track,” Chirewa is quoted by the Wolves website.

“When I was running through, I just wanted to score. I knew in my head that I was going to score the goal. When the goalkeeper got a touch to it, I thought maybe I was unlucky, but thankfully it still went in. It was a big moment.”

CHIREWA ON TAKING HIS CHANCE BY THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK

The 23-year-old has been at the club since 2023 but has been made to wait for his chance, admitting that the season has not been easy. At some point he fell out of the squad at one but insisted he has always stayed ready.

“I’m not going to lie and say the season has been amazing for me. I think I started off well when I played and felt as though I had a good impact. Obviously, there was a spell when I didn’t play for a few games or wasn’t in the squad,” he said.

“Today, before the game it was a big one because of the injuries we had. The team needed more attacking threat, and I felt as though I had been ready this season. I just hope I gave the manager something to think about.”

Chirewa made a point of celebrating with the travelling fans at the final whistle, saying he wanted to give something back after waiting so long for his chance under both Gary O’Neil and the current boss Cesar Peixoto.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a while, to be fair. I feel as though I’ve been around the first team for quite a few years now, and the fans have stuck by the team,” he said
