Black Rhinos stretch lead as Chingwere, Eagles stumble

Black Rhinos tightened their grip on top spot in the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League after a convincing 3-1 away victory over Batanai in Week 21. Having led Harare City by two points before the round, Rhinos moved to 41 points and continued to boast the division’s meanest defence.
Coming into the weekend, Black Rhinos sat at the summit with 38 points, just two ahead of second-placed Harare City. The army side ensured they would remain in control after a convincing 3-1 away victory over Batanai FC, moving to 41 points and piling pressure on Harare City ahead of their fixture.
The result further underlined Rhinos’ credentials as serious title contenders. They now boast 11 wins from 21 matches and continue to combine defensive solidity with timely goals.
Elsewhere, Golden Eagles’ mixed form continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by CP Chemicals. Having entered the weekend in fifth place on 30 points with one win in their previous four matches, Eagles could only add one point to their tally. Their recent slump has seen them lose ground on the leading pack after once being considered genuine promotion challengers.
There was also disappointment for Chingwere ,who began the day in seventh place with 29 points. They suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Black Mambas FC, a result that dents their hopes of climbing into the top five.
In the mid-table battles, Cranborne Bullets boosted their campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory over Karoi United. The win lifts Bullets from 27 points and could see them make significant progress up the standings.
Meanwhile, there was little to separate Banket United and Jumbo Giants, who played out a 0-0 draw, with both sides taking a point in their quest to remain in the top half of the table.
At the bottom end, Chegutu Pirates and Zambezi G & C also shared the spoils in a goalless stalemate, a result that does little to ease the relegation concerns of either side.
With Black Rhinos now opening up a bigger gap at the summit and several of their nearest challengers dropping points, Week 21 may prove to be a crucial turning point in the race for promotion in the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League.
