Zimbabwe’s Junior Women Shine in Windhoek Despite Setback

The Zimbabwe Junior Women’s hockey team has had a rollercoaster campaign so far at the Junior Africa Cup 2025, currently underway at the Davin Trustco Hockey Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia. The tournament, running from 18 to 25 April, has seen spirited performances from the Zimbabwean side as they aim to assert themselves among Africa’s elite junior teams.

Zimbabwe opened their tournament with a dominant 8-1 victory over Zambia on 18 April. Displaying excellent composure and tactical awareness, the girls controlled the pace of the game from the outset, converting chances clinically and defending with discipline.

However, their momentum was halted in their second fixture against the hosts, Namibia, on 19 April. In what was a tough outing, Zimbabwe struggled to break through Namibia’s structured defence and fell to a 6-0 defeat. It was a humbling result for the side, which served as a wake-up call midway through the tournament.

Showing impressive resilience, Zimbabwe bounced back in their third match on 21 April against Uganda. They returned to winning ways with a 5-1 triumph, delivering a strong statement of intent. The team played with renewed confidence and executed set pieces with precision, demonstrating their ability to recover from adversity and learn quickly.

With two wins from three matches, Zimbabwe remains in contention for a strong finish in the competition. The next few days will be crucial as the team looks to build on its positive performances and finish the tournament on a high note. Our Zim U21 women’s team will play South Africa on the twenty-second of April.
