Zimbabwe Name Test Squad for New Zealand Series as Curran and Raza Return

Zimbabwe have announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand, which begins on 26 July in Bulawayo. The squad sees the welcome return of Ben Curran (he was injured) and Sikandar Raza (Raza was playing in the Major League Cricket in the US), both of whom missed the previous Tests series against South Africa.

There is growing speculation that Brendan Taylor could also be included, with reports suggesting that after his ban officially ends on Friday, he may be confirmed in the squad on Saturday. Taylor’s return would certainly boost Zimbabwe’s experience and batting strength.

The Chevrons will be desperate to put on a stronger showing after their humbling defeat to South Africa in July, where they lost the series 2-0, including an innings and 236-run loss in the second Test. It was a sobering reminder of the gap between Zimbabwe and the top Test nations, and the players will be determined to put up a better fight against New Zealand.

However, it will not be an easy task. New Zealand, currently ranked third in the ICC Test rankings, are one of the most complete sides in world cricket, boasting quality in both batting and bowling. Their recent World Test Championship final appearance is testament to their consistency in the format.

Zimbabwe’s squad is a blend of youth and experience, with captain Craig Ervine leading a side that includes seasoned names like Sean Williams, Raza, and Blessing Muzarabani, as well as promising talents like Brian Bennett and Nick Welch.

This series will be an important marker of Zimbabwe’s progress in the longest format. With the home crowd behind them, the Chevrons will be hoping to cause an upset or at the very least, show significant improvement against elite opposition.

The first Test starts on 26 July, with the second scheduled for early August.
