Zimbabwe Gear Up for ODI Challenge Against Sri Lanka

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, set for August 29 and 31 at Harare Sports Club. The series marks a significant moment as Brendan Taylor returns to the 50-over format for the first time since September 2021.

Craig Ervine will captain the side, leading a mix of seasoned campaigners and fresh faces as Zimbabwe looks to bounce back from a challenging Test season. Taylor’s comeback is expected to bring not only quality in the batting lineup but also invaluable experience, particularly in high-pressure moments.

The squad also welcomes the return of pace spearhead Richard Ngarava, who is back from injury to join Blessing Muzarabani in a strengthened bowling attack. Four players who missed the ODI series against Ireland earlier this year — Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans, and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku — have also been included, giving the side added depth and options.

Convener of Selectors David Mutendera highlighted that the team blends proven match-winners with younger players eager to make their mark, creating a balance of experience and energy that could prove key against a strong Sri Lankan outfit.

Both captain Craig Ervine and head coach Justin Sammons acknowledged that adjusting from the tempo of red-ball cricket to the intensity of ODIs will be a challenge. With Sri Lanka known for their sharp white-ball game, Zimbabwe will need to stay disciplined and capitalize on home conditions to compete effectively.

This series will be Zimbabwe’s first taste of ODI cricket since February, after focusing heavily on Tests throughout the year. The two ODIs will be followed by a three-match T20I series in early September, providing further preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup Qualifiers later in the year.

Zimbabwe ODI squad: Craig Ervine (Captain), Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Ben Curran, Brad Evans, Trevor Gwandu, Wessly Madhevere, Clive Madande, Ernest Masuku, Tony Munyonga, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Sikandar Raza, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.
