Zim starlet emerges at Portuguese top-tier club Gil Vicente

Rising Zimbabwean starlet Cobert Chimedza Junior has joined Portuguese top-flight side Gil Vicente on a one-year contract.

The 20-year-old lanky forward, who was born in Harare but moved to England at 14 years of age, becomes the first Zimbabwean to join a Portuguese top-tier side since Independence.

The late Fredy Mukwesha played for Sporting Braga in the 1960s.

Chimedza has previously turned out for English League 2 side MK Dons and scored 15 goals for them.

The forward once trained with the Warriors during the Zdravko Logarusic era in 2022 and was heaped with praise by then vice captain Ovidy Karuru.

Gil Vicente, who are under the guidance of Portuguese mentor César Peixoto, are 14th on the table with 26 points from 27 matches.

Chimedza’s move comes at a time Zimbabweans have been clamoring for youngsters to be drafted into the Warriors, particularly those plying their trade in Europe.

The duo of Tawanda Maswanhise and Tawanda Chirewa have done well to the point of some fans demanding that they start.

Chirewa scored a stoppage-time equalizer against Nigeria, who all but dashed the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup dream.
