Zimbabwe Under-19 face a stern examination tomorrow when they take on Pakistan Under-19 in their final Group C fixture of the ICC Under-19 World Cup at Takashinga Sports Club. With their tournament hanging in the balance, the Young Chevrons know the size of the challenge in front of them.
Results have not gone Zimbabwe’s way so far. Their opening match against Scotland was completely washed out without a ball being bowled, denying them what looked like their most realistic chance of an early win. That was followed by an eight-wicket defeat to England, leaving Zimbabwe bottom of the group with a struggling net run rate.
Pakistan, currently second in the group, will arrive as firm favourites. Earlier this month, the two sides met in a warm-up triangular series where Pakistan cruised to a nine-wicket victory, underlining the gulf Zimbabwe must try to close. That result will still be fresh in the minds of the Young Chevrons and adds another psychological hurdle to overcome.
There is also the lingering concern of the Takashinga outfield. Any rain overnight could leave conditions unplayable, and a washout would see the points shared. Given Zimbabwe’s position, that may not be the worst outcome, but it would still feel like a missed opportunity on home soil.
For Zimbabwe to be competitive, they will need a much stronger showing with the bat. Encouraging signs came against England, where captain Simbarashe Mudzengerere led by example with an unbeaten 45. Support from Kian Blignaut (33), Dhruv Patel (36) and Tatenda Chimugoro (30) showed glimpses of resilience that must now be built upon.
It will be a tough assignment, but with pride, pressure and home support in play, the Young Chevrons will be hoping to rise to the occasion.
