Warriors end winless run with shock win over World-Cup bound Qatar

In a much-needed boost to morale, the Warriors secured a 2–1 victory against Qatar in an international friendly on Monday evening. The win ended a year-long drought without a win across all competitions and offers a timely lift as Zimbabwe rebuilds under new leadership.

Qatar — a side already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — struck first through Mohamed Gouda in the 9th minute, taking an early lead in the contest. But Zimbabwe responded in the 24th minute when Munashe Garan’anga rose unmarked to head in a corner from Godknows Murwira, restoring parity.

The decisive moment came in the second half. Bill Antonio, introduced after the break, slotted home in the 74th minute following a sustained attacking move. Zimbabwe then defended resolutely in the closing stages, holding off Qatar’s late pressure to preserve the hard-earned win.

This result also marks the first win for coach Marian Marinica, just over a week into his tenure, offering encouraging evidence that the national team may be beginning to find its footing under his guidance.

While Qatar remain a strong side — already having secured their place at the 2026 World Cup — Zimbabwe’s victory will be viewed as a moral triumph. The Warriors showed resolve, tactical balance and, perhaps most importantly, an ability to deliver when it matters.
