Villa stunned Tottenham with Buendia’s last-minute winner

Aston Villa overturned an early deficit to defeat Tottenham, denying the hosts a chance to move up to second place in the Premier League. Morgan Rogers’ stunning equaliser and Emiliano Buendia’s decisive strike in the closing stages secured a memorable comeback for Unai Emery’s side.

The visitors found themselves trailing within five minutes when Rodrigo Bentancur marked his first goal of 2025. The midfielder reacted sharply to a loose ball, smashing in from close range after Joao Palhinha’s header and Mohammed Kudus’ deep delivery from the left caused confusion in the Villa area.

Rogers responds with brilliant strike

Despite the wet conditions, the game produced plenty of attacking moments. Rogers levelled the score with his first goal of the campaign — and his first since April — delivering a spectacular looping effort from around 20 yards. Surrounded by multiple defenders, the midfielder created space and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, finding the net just beneath the crossbar.

Both teams felt they had cases for penalties after the interval. Kevin Danso, starting unexpectedly due to Cristian Romero’s injury in the warm-up, caught Lucas Digne on the ankle with his follow-through, but no foul was awarded. Spurs also appealed when the ball struck Ezri Konsa’s raised arms inside the box, though the referee again waved play on.

Buendia seals the win

Just as the contest seemed to be fading, Villa produced a decisive moment. Matty Cash switched play with a precise long ball from defence to Digne, who then set up Buendia. The substitute cut inside and found the bottom corner in the 77th minute, scoring his third goal in four matches.

The result gave Villa their third league victory of the season and extended their winning run across all competitions to five games. On the touchline, Emery celebrated enthusiastically as his team claimed a valuable away triumph.
