Alexander Isak’s situation at Newcastle United remains uncertain, with manager Eddie Howe emphasising that any resolution must align with the club’s best interests. The Swedish forward, currently sidelined with a thigh issue, did not travel with the squad to Singapore. While Newcastle attributed his absence to injury, the 25-year-old is reportedly exploring a potential move, amid continued interest from Liverpool.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s upcoming pre-season fixture against Arsenal, Howe addressed the speculation: “There are always things happening behind the scenes. Alex is in the spotlight daily, which can’t be easy. Any discussions between him and the club—or with me—will remain confidential.” Howe praised Isak’s contribution since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022, highlighting his importance to the squad and strong bond with teammates.
Injury or uncertainty?
Howe clarified that Isak’s injury concerns began prior to the 4-0 defeat to Celtic, when the striker first reported discomfort. “We didn’t think it was serious,” he said, explaining that Isak attempted to train on Monday but didn’t feel fit to continue. The club is currently assessing the extent of the problem in Newcastle, with Howe hopeful of the striker’s swift return to action.
After the Celtic match, Howe had expressed confidence that Isak would feature in the team’s pre-season tour of Asia. However, those plans changed, and the player remained behind. “Hopefully, we’ll see him back soon in black and white,” Howe said.
Transfer speculation and club position
Despite Liverpool’s recent £69 million acquisition of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, the Merseyside club reportedly remains interested in Isak. The striker’s current contract runs until June 2028, and he scored 27 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions last season.
Asked directly about Isak’s future, Howe reiterated his desire for the player to stay, but acknowledged that the ultimate decision would lie with the club’s board. “I haven’t spoken with the board yet about Alex’s situation,” he noted. “Any contract discussions would come later. My opinion matters, but the final call isn’t mine alone.” Despite ongoing speculation, Howe remains optimistic: “I’m still confident he’ll stay. We’re in a strong financial position and ambitious for the season ahead. The club’s progression remains our top priority.”
