Ngoni Stadium was rocking over the weekend as MWOS FC produced a spirited and clinical performance to stun CAPS United 2-0, booking their place in the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals. The result not only sent shockwaves through the competition but also marked a historic moment — CAPS became the first team MWOS have ever beaten in the tournament.
From the opening whistle, the home side showed more intent. Nigel Matinha picked up a yellow card just two minutes in, but that didn’t deter him or his teammates. MWOS carved out the early chances, with Billy Veremu’s free-kick and Tafadzwa George’s header both forcing sharp saves. Abubakar Moffat’s perfectly weighted pass on 20 minutes found George in the box, but a heavy touch saw the opportunity vanish.
CAPS United, by contrast, were sluggish going forward, struggling to carve open the MWOS defence. Their attacks lacked urgency and penetration, leaving their travelling fans frustrated.
MWOS’s persistence finally paid off in the 55th minute. A loose ball dropped kindly to Matinha, who unleashed a thunderous strike into the top-left corner — a goal of pure quality. The Ngoni Stadium crowd erupted, sensing a famous victory.
Debutant Takudzwa Mutenheri added fresh legs on 65 minutes, and MWOS continued to press. The decisive moment came in the 86th minute when Arthur Banda cut loose from distance, his shot flying past the CAPS keeper to seal the win.
The day held extra significance as 13-year-old Ethan Tamson, son of the club owner, made his first-team debut, becoming the youngest player in PSL history.
It was a commanding and disciplined performance from MWOS, in stark contrast to CAPS United’s lacklustre, underwhelming display. The Punters march on — and their Chibuku Super Cup dreams are still alive.
