The Highlanders executive has failed Benjani, and many other coaches before him

While many Highlanders fans are still trying to comprehend what Benjani Mwaruwari said in his interview yesterday, the former Warriors captain’s facial expression of anger communicated more than his words could.

What started as a normal preview of this afternoon’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Bosso and FC Platinum at Babourfields, ended up being a stark reminder of how chaotic the iconic club is and has been for years now.

One didn’t need magnifying glasses to see how angry Mwaruwari was, when he hinted to the world, of a possible strained relationship between him and the Bosso executive -characterized by lingering animosity and poor communication.

“I haven’t heard from the club concerning the issue of work permits for the Zambian players. Normally, by now, I should have had the answers.

“They (members of the executive) are not doing enough for the players to have work permits. It’s been one month and we are still waiting for those work permits.

“Somehow they dont want it to happen (for players to have work permits).

“I’m sorry to say this but I have to be open on some of these things. I have been working in difficult conditions. Everyone didn’t want me here, that’s a fact,” added Mwaruwari.

While the debate on whether or not Mwaruwari meant what he said when he remarked “everyone didn’t want me here” or perhaps the former Warriors captain wanted to say “not everyone wanted me here” can go on until the cows come home, what’s not up for discussion is the fact that anger arises from many things, chief among them unsatisfied needs.

Mwaruwari needs support from the Highlanders executive and to his frustration, he is getting little, if not none at all.

The relationship between the Bosso executive and ‘The Undertaker’, was ticking time bomb which exploded yesterday.

Mwaruwari’s outburst was a genuine expression which the Highlanders fans should listen to, as a way to understand not to reply.

Bosso fans should not instead, prefer a situation whereby the former Manchester City striker fakes a smile and pretend as if all is rosy when it’s not.

Shakira’s ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ topped charts around the world when it was released in 2006 and that is probably the party song Highlanders fans danced to, in celebration of their last Premiership title in the very same year.

The fact that an iconic club like Bosso last won the title twenty years ago, mirrors the sad reality of an institution blighted by a crisis of leadership.

The Highlanders executive has failed the club’s ever-demanding faithful for more than a decade but coaches have used as an excuse.

Portuguese mentor Baltemar Brito mounted a serious title charge in 2023, which saw Bosso going for 19 matches without tasting defeat, before his efforts would end up in vain because of lack of support from the executive.

Brito openly criticized the Bosso leadership before he was predictably shown the exit door.
